Beer Labels and Brewery

Beer Labels

After consultation with Phil I have decided to work on beer labels for three different breweries. I have decided to work on one of the below....

Summerskills - Ninja BeerI would like to do this one but it is an occasional beer, the below would be another option from Summerskills

Summerskills - Whistle Belly Vengence

South Ham Brewery - Eddystone

South Hams Brewery seems to have two labels - one for bottles (top) and one for taps (below) - this would be interesting to work on, plus it has a historical note on it.

Castle Brewery Lostwithiel - Once a Knight

This is a small brewery in Cornwall, it's labels seems to be printed on injet and would be interesting to put my own special mark on it.

More Beer research

On Wednesday (31st March 2010) I went to a small business awards, and at one of the stalls was a guy who had a micro brewery, a company called 'Greenroom Ales Ltd' (www.greenroomales.co.uk). Although he was not interested in having new labels done, as he had recently redesigned his bottle, plus they have a more trendy feel to the bottles, he did say that there is a place for cartoons in ale labels, he also gave me a business card and said to contact him, as he knows some people who may be interested, he mentioned, Keltek Brewery (www.keltekbrewery.co.uk) which as more of a cartoon feel. I will email Stephen Burton of Greenwood Ales and see what comes of it.

Beer Research

I have just visited a shop in town called 'Moor & More Beer' (www.moorandmorebeer.co.uk) and spoke with the owner of the shop about labels. He said that the label of the beer DOES make a difference in sales and how poor labels can stop people buying the product. I also had a look at the ales on the shelf and bought several bottles from 'Summerskills Brewery' (www.summerskills.co.uk). He also gave me the name of the person who owns Summerskills, a Carl Beeson and he told me that he is an ex-navy man and that is why many of the beers have a navy theme. He also told me that the owner of 'South Hams Brewery' (www.southhamsbrewery.co.uk) is actually looking to redesign the labels as he has told the owner that he was not impressed by the bottles, this may be worth looking into. He also gave me two websites www.southdevoncamra.com and www.carnmenellis.demon.co.uk which has a list of real ale brewerys in south devon and cornwall. Also his website (noted above) has a list of brewerys too.

The beers I bought were as followed...

  • Summerskills Best Bitter
  • Devon Dew
  • Guzzale
  • Indiana's Bones
  • Out Back & Home
  • Whistle Belly Vengeance

Research for final project

I am doing two projects for my final project, the first project is a series of editorials from actual magazines. The second is to create a series of beer labels, for a local brewery.
